43rd New Jersey Senior Citizens Annual Juried Art Contest and Exhibition

The PHS Senior Living Foundation has been chosen to host the 42nd New Jersey Senior Citizens Annual Art Contest and Exhibition.  The event will take place at Meadow Lakes in East Windsor, NJ and will be available for viewing the entire month of October, 2009.

In 1966, the New Jersey Division on Aging sponsored the first statewide Senior Citizen Juried Art Contest and Exhibition. In that inaugural year, only paintings were exhibited. Over the ensuing 41 years, the categories of artwork expanded to include drawing, mixed–media, sculpture, photography, pastel, print, digital imagery and one-of-a kind fine art crafts.  The purpose of the art contest is to showcase the abilities of older adults, demonstrating to the general public that creativity doesn’t diminish with age.

 The exhibition first took place at the State Museum and then the Sate House. After graciously hosting the show for 14 years, the Monmouth County Library Headquarters passed the torch onto Hunterdon County’s Division of Senior Services in Flemington.  County Senior Art Shows, sponsored by local area agencies on aging and/or cultural and heritage affairs, and parks, take place throughout the spring and early summer.

 Entry to the New Jersey State Exhibit is limited to first place winners selected by the judges at each county’s art show. In 2008 over 230 works of art in 11 categories by both professional and non-professional artists from 17 counties were on exhibit.
